Risk Data and Mitigation Workshop dates for Michigan Counties

FEMA has completed coastal flood hazard analysis and mapping in 7 Michigan counties along Lake Michigan and prepared draft workmaps depicting results of the study. We would like to invite you to attend the Risk Data and Mitigation Workshop for your county. The objectives for this meeting are to allow local review of work maps that show the results of the mapping project efforts to-date, as well as provide information about how your community can use this information to elevate risk awareness and stimulate mitigation actions. Each meeting will be 2 to 3hours in length, dedicated to accomplishing the following goals:

  • Share study methodology and engineering results;
  • Discuss the analytical methods and data utilized to assess and map flood hazards associated with Lake Michigan coastal flooding;
  • Provide relevant background to community officials on GLFHM coastal analysis and mapping, so that they can effectively support next steps of the mapping process in their community
  • Engage State and local officials and technical experts in determining the best approach in producing updated flood maps that accurately and precisely reflect flood risk; and
  • Provide the basis for future dialogue between FEMA, state and local communities regarding inputs for study execution, public review of data and results, and opportunities for enhancing community planning processes.

Because local involvement is critical to this process, we are reaching out to local community officials and other stakeholders to provide an opportunity to review and discuss the results of the coastal flood hazard analysis and mapping performed for your county. FEMA is also committed to an open, collaborative process, and your community’s participation in next steps of the project. We have provided information below on the date, time, and location of the meetings. Feel free to forward this information to others who you feel are appropriate to attend these meetings:

Inland Scoping Schedule for Michigan Counties

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) conducts scoping meetings to determine the riverine flood mapping update needs. These efforts are combined with the lake-wide coastal flood hazard mapping effort with the outcomes constituting the first basin-wide update of water-level statistics and flood hazard data compiled by the United States government for the Great Lakes in 25 years.

Under these riverine scoping efforts, a key phase in this study process is FEMA’s consultation with local communities through the conduct of a scoping meeting and the collection of data. FEMA uses these scoping meetings and follow-up conversation to collect information that will contribute to a better understanding of local flood risk conditions. A second purpose of this outreach is to provide a venue for sharing information related to study methodology and schedules.

Great Lakes Water Levels Special Report in Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel recently published a very informative and interesting series on Water Levels in the Great Lakes called Uncharted Waters.

Part 1
Does Lake Michigan’s record low mark beginning of new era for Great Lakes?
At least 150 years of rhythmic pulses in Lake Michigan’s water levels appear to have shifted abruptly with loss of winter ice.

Part 2
Water flushes through a greatly widened drain below Lakes Michigan, Huron
Every time dredging widened and deepened the hole at the bottom of the lakes, the federal government was supposed to engineer a fix to maintain water levels – but it never did.

Technical Resources Page Added to GreatLakesCoast.org

A new page has been added to the Great Lakes Coastal Flood Study website in the menu on the left called Technical Resources. The Technical Resources page contains links to data and reports of interest to engineers and other technical stakeholders interested in the Great Lakes Coastal Flood Study.

As of this posting, there is a link to high-resolution bathymetric and topographic LiDAR data on NOAA’s Coastal Services Center Digital Coast website. In June 2012, additional data links will go live, including the C-STORM wave and storm surge database (containing all the wind, wave, pressure, ice and water level data for the Great Lakes basin) and the Great Lakes Oblique Photo Viewer (containing all the coastal oblique photographs of the Great Lakes shoreline).

The Technical Resources page also currently houses links to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports relevant to the Great Lakes Coastal Flood Study, as well as a link to the FEMA Great Lakes Coastal Guidelines, Appendix D.3 Update at fema.gov, which includes information on the 60-day public comment process that starts today.

All stakeholders are invited to review and comment on this draft guidance. See FEMA’s webpage for e-mail address for submission of comments.
