Welcome to the official site for FEMA's Great Lakes Coastal Flood Study, the comprehensive storm and wind study of the Great Lakes basin for the purpose of updating the coastal flood hazard information and Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) for Great Lakes coastal communities. Below you’ll find a list of the most recent meetings with their agendas, links to preliminary maps, and presentations. To the left you’ll find additional Great Lakes Coastal Flood Study content.

FEMA created this self-guided tutorial on coastal flood mapping that provides important information to coastal communities and their residents. FEMA’s “Coastal Hazards and Coastal Mapping: A Visual Guide” is a glossary of coastal mapping terms and a companion to the tutorial.

Lake Michigan Work Map Meetings

Local officials and technical stakeholders are being invited to community meetings to review and comment on FEMA’s draft coastal flood hazard work maps for the Lake Michigan Shoreline. FEMA’s outreach meetings for the 2017 work maps start in early July.

Each meeting will include a summary of the draft work maps, Q&A, and a breakout for review of community-specific data via printed and online maps. Staff members and officials representing villages, cities, and county government, regional organizations, non-governmental bodies, neighborhood associations, and harbor and shoreline protection engineers are encouraged to attend and to provide feedback within the 60-day comment period.

Risk Data and Mitigation Workshop dates for Michigan Counties

FEMA has completed coastal flood hazard analysis and mapping in 7 Michigan counties along Lake Michigan and prepared draft workmaps depicting results of the study. We would like to invite you to attend the Risk Data and Mitigation Workshop for your county. The objectives for this meeting are to allow local review of work maps that show the results of the mapping project efforts to-date, as well as provide information about how your community can use this information to elevate risk awareness and stimulate mitigation actions. Each meeting will be 2 to 3hours in length, dedicated to accomplishing the following goals:

  • Share study methodology and engineering results;
  • Discuss the analytical methods and data utilized to assess and map flood hazards associated with Lake Michigan coastal flooding;
  • Provide relevant background to community officials on GLFHM coastal analysis and mapping, so that they can effectively support next steps of the mapping process in their community
  • Engage State and local officials and technical experts in determining the best approach in producing updated flood maps that accurately and precisely reflect flood risk; and
  • Provide the basis for future dialogue between FEMA, state and local communities regarding inputs for study execution, public review of data and results, and opportunities for enhancing community planning processes.

Because local involvement is critical to this process, we are reaching out to local community officials and other stakeholders to provide an opportunity to review and discuss the results of the coastal flood hazard analysis and mapping performed for your county. FEMA is also committed to an open, collaborative process, and your community’s participation in next steps of the project. We have provided information below on the date, time, and location of the meetings. Feel free to forward this information to others who you feel are appropriate to attend these meetings:

Inland Scoping Schedule for Michigan Counties

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) conducts scoping meetings to determine the riverine flood mapping update needs. These efforts are combined with the lake-wide coastal flood hazard mapping effort with the outcomes constituting the first basin-wide update of water-level statistics and flood hazard data compiled by the United States government for the Great Lakes in 25 years.

Under these riverine scoping efforts, a key phase in this study process is FEMA’s consultation with local communities through the conduct of a scoping meeting and the collection of data. FEMA uses these scoping meetings and follow-up conversation to collect information that will contribute to a better understanding of local flood risk conditions. A second purpose of this outreach is to provide a venue for sharing information related to study methodology and schedules.
